A stunning cruise along the Mekong from Phnom Penh to one of our favourite locations. The Khmer Silk Factory on Koh Dach is otherwise known as “Silk Island”

Situated just north of the confluence of the Mekong and Tonle Sap rivers, Koh Dach (Silk Island) is home to a mesmerising silk weaving village and factory. Cambodia’s silk weaving history stretches back farther than the beginning of the reign of the Angkor Kings. Silk Island embodies a traditional way of life.

Beautiful rich silk and cotton fabrics in jewel colours are woven on manual wooden looms into stunning designs.

Knowledge is passed down through generations of weavers. No written pattern is followed and it’s truly fascinating to see wonderfully complex designs emerge in the hands of these skilled artisans.

You’ll be able to watch how silk is processed; from beginning to end, including witnessing silkworms eating their way through mulberry leaves, their cocoons, the drying of the skeins,  the dyeing, the weaving,  to the final product. The visitor centre includes an exciting insight into the life cycle of silkworm to adult moth (albeit it a short one).

Koh Dach has beautiful villages through which to wander and, a lovely beach at the northern tip of the island. Having visited the Silk factory, have a stroll, enjoy a refreshing drink, or a dip in the Mekong. Cattle graze in green fields, chickens wander at will, the looms clack away. It’s a place that hasn’t been touched much by the modern world.

We’ll start our cruise from Phnom Penh, around 9 am. Because this is a relatively short cruise of approximately 9 km; we’ll expect to arrive at Silk Island around 10 am.

Take as much time as you like to explore the island. You can dictate your pace. Or, if you want to take it easy on board; jump in the jacuzzi or stretch out on the sun loungers – That’s ok too. It’s just as relaxing lazily bobbing on the river in comfort!

When you’re ready, we’ll serve a delicious lunch on board with your choice of complimentary wine, beer, gin & tonic or soft drinks.
